News surfaced today first via WinBeta.org that Microsoft are planning a media event in San Francisco for their Xbox and Windows 10 titles with hands-on previews available for members of the press for their line-up launching this Spring.
Here are the games they have down for release in that period:
- Killer Instinct: Season 3 (Xbox One & Windows 10) – March 2016
- Quantum Break (Xbox One) – April 5, 2016
- Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition (Xbox One & Windows 10) – Spring 2016
- Gears of War: Ultimate Edition (Windows 10) – Spring 2016
- Fable Legends Open Beta (Xbox One & Windows 10) – Spring 2016
- Gears of War 4 (Xbox One) – Multiplayer Beta in Spring 2016
I would expect these games to be the main headliners, Cobalt is releasing February 2nd so could be there as well as perhaps another play area with more indie titles and anything else is questionable (more on that later).
For the games above, they make a lot of sense to all be there with Microsoft detailing those release periods just a few weeks ago and certainly the first 5 I’d say were a given with Gears of War 4 being a bit of a question mark. I say that because it’s a tent pole blockbuster release for them and showing the multiplayer for a Gears of War or Halo title is no small thing and they will want to make a big splash with it particularly as it’s The Coalition’s first original game, perhaps they will tie the unveiling into something else.
Spring ranges from mid-March to mid-June which is just after E3, I expect the beta to be done before E3 so they can save the conference for a nice big campaign demo however generally Gears of War titles have a Game Informer cover with lots of details and I don’t expect them to miss out on that opportunity. I’d say Gears of War 4’s multiplayer should be there but its the only one above that if it didn’t happen perhaps we could see why (although it would be pretty silly not to really).
Quantum Break is the biggest new title launching in that period for Microsoft in the first half of 2016, a brand new IP from Remedy which Microsoft also own and have put a lot of backing into and there is still a lot of mystery around the title.
Sam Lake tweeted last week they had press at the studio to play the game so they are beginning to let members of the press finally get hands-on but there are also lots of things we don’t know: Will there be a Collectors/Limited Edition version? Pre-order bonuses? Console bundle(s)? Do they have any plans for DLC? So this could be a good event to get more information on their launch plans for Quantum Break if some of that stuff isn’t already detailed.
Outside of those the other small contenders to be there are Gigantic and ReCore although personally wouldn’t go expecting to see either unless MS say otherwise. The former was delayed around the same time as Fable Legends but wasn’t given a specific release period so it depends when they are intending to launch it really.
ReCore was originally a Spring 2016 launch and was delayed to “2016”, at this point the game is a mystery from a gameplay point of view and they surely be getting ready to show it to the world but who knows what their plans are with that.
As I said I wouldn’t expect the other two unless they say otherwise but they are the outsiders. Microsoft have as yet given no sign of new game or other announcements, it seems to be an event for their Spring line-up which has been pretty clearly detailed, we will have to wait and see what other details MS in the coming weeks.
Personally I am really hoping to see Gears of War 4 and would like a date for Ori and the Blind Forest Definitive Edition!
