Hype: Wolfenstein The Old Blood (5th May)

Wolfenstein The Old Blood is a standalone prequel to The New Order which released last year, developed by Machine Games, I enjoyed The New Order a lot and I am very excited for The Old Blood.

“The year is 1946 and the Nazis are on the brink of winning World War II. In an effort to turn the tide in the allies’ favor, B.J. Blazkowicz must embark on an epic, two-part mission deep within Bavaria…

Part one of Wolfenstein: The Old Blood – Rudi Jäger and the Den of Wolves – pits BJ Blazkowicz against a maniacal prison warden as he breaks into Castle Wolfenstein in an attempt to steal the coordinates to General Deathshead’s compound. In part two – The Dark Secrets of Helga Von Schabbs – our hero’s search for the coordinates leads him to the city of Wulfburg where an obsessed Nazi archaeologist is exhuming mysterious artifacts that threaten to unleash a dark and ancient power.” (Via Wolfenstein.com)

Standalone expansions are great and its good to see Machine Games are developing more in the franchise after such a good first game. The strength of The New Order outside of its lengthy campaign was that it was only focused on a campaign, Machine Games obviously felt that was where their strength was and all of their efforts went into creating a great experience that fit the franchise and surprised a lot of people, putting Wolfenstein back on the map for many people who thought it probably wouldn’t be relevant again.

There has also been a tease of zombies and it will be interesting to see what exactly this leads to, perhaps a co-op mode or something? Who knows, the game is out soon though and I look forward to playing it.

Releasing only for next-gen consoles and PC too will be interesting to see if dropping last-gen consoles has any effect on the title too although perhaps that will be something more evident in a sequel than a standalone expansion like The Old Blood. Check out the trailer below for more on the game.
