Gears of War 4 releases October 11th, whilst there has been some new multiplayer details at PAX this weekend some things are still under wraps, Xbox.com (via New Zealand region) has given us some details on the Ultimate Edition of Gears of War 4.

Costing $150 (New Zealand dollars) it includes Gears of War 4, the Seasons Pass and Vintage Del Multiplayer Character, as well as 4 days early access to the game which means that rather than waiting until October 11th, you can play it on October 7th. Knack Thoughts

Knack

Knack was a new IP directed by PS4 lead architect Mark Cerny which released at the PS4 launch over 2 years ago so I’m a bit late on this one but I recently played and finished it and found it to be a game I had some things I wanted to write about!

What it’s about…

You play as a Knack, a little fellow made of mysterious ancient relics (and voiced by Halo 5’s Spartan Locke too!) bound together by Dr Vargas. The story starts off as a quest to defeat the rising tide of the goblins led by Gundahar who has been attacking human settlements and interweaves with in fighting involving a rich maniac wannabe whose intention is to use much bigger relics than those used to power Knack to rule the world, basically. Knack is a big relic given a consciousness and can gather many smaller relics to grow bigger and cause more destruction as well as use various elements (like wood and ice) to give him different abilities. He can also collect sun stones which help unleash more powerful attacks.

Whats good?

The character designs are really good, I like the cartoony style which looks nice and they were definitely what stood out for me the most and this also translates quite well into the cut-scenes which look equally stylish and are nice to watch. (more…)

Planetbase Early Impressions

PB4

I was browsing Steam when I found I found this game in my recommended section and found it only sale on the Humble Store so I quickly bought it and jumped right in, at time of writing I have played it for 5 hours and I really like it.

It’s a city building management game about establishing an outpost on a remote planet, you have a group of space settlers in a ship with some resources and your job is to grow set up and grow your base, getting the necessary materials you need to survive in this uncharted world. The description to me seemed very much like Banished in space and that is pretty much exactly what it is and I can’t describe how happy I am about that.

You start with more than enough materials to get your base up and running, the tutorial is reasonably thorough in helping you get the basics but it might take a little longer to really get how it flows, you need to build a number of things straight away to survive which is why you get more materials than you might do in other games: an airlock to get your settlers into the base, oxygen tank, dorm (sleeping), canteen, bio-dome (grow food/resources), wind-turbines and solar panels for power (plus extra storage), water extractor and then after that you can look at what is next which means building up your base, getting more materials from things like mining and trading before you can then start producing your own equipment to promote stronger growth. Extreme Exorcism Review

RulezPlay Screenshot 2015-09-26 15-52-54

Extreme Exorcism is a pixel-art paranormal platformer where you fight against yourself set in a haunted house. Its based on an interesting concept – playing against your own ghosts and killing them to get high scores in different modes, it’s the fourth game by developer Golden Ruby Games and published by Ripstone who have also released the likes of Pure Pool, Stick it to The Man and Pure Hold ’em.

It was something I wasn’t really sure how well it was going to work, taking ghosts in racing games (and others) to the next level in a more literal way and it works really well. The first enemy is a paranormal chair which doesn’t attack you so that the game can get your first ghost ready then every time you complete a round your ghosts come back and follow your exact same movement and attacking pattern which once it gets going turns into a frantic solo or multiplayer game as more ghosts come on-screen. Games With Gold: A Great Improvement

xbox-games-with-gold-list

Games With Gold was a program born as a response to Sony’s “Instant Game Collection” for PS+ which formed the basis of their paid subscription plan, after an initial period of other titles including PS1 classics it started giving away PS3 games and has built its success around that idea but it took Microsoft a long while to add their own similar service to Xbox Live Gold.

I’m a believer still that despite how the different subscription services have converged to offer the same/similar features that the backbone for each of them are still built off their original foundations: Xbox Live Gold still aims at providing online multiplayer and the best experience for that whilst PS+ aims to offer the best service for providing games to their subscriptions, with online multiplayer being used to get more subscribers.

I don’t want to spend all my time here comparing the services as that’s not my point, more stating what I believe they both set out to do and how Microsoft have improved the Games With Gold service.

GW1

  • Enhanced mechanics

News Roundup: NPDs, XBLIG and Knoxville [12th September]

August 2015 NPDs

  • Playstation 4 wins the hardware battle, Xbox One up 26% Year-on-Year
  • Madden 16 takes #1 spot, Gears Ultimate Edition #3, Rare Replay #6, Until Dawn #7
  • Most games selling better on PS4
  • 7 million Amiibos sold

Not a surprise to me that Sony won the hardware race again, despite the TV + Xbox One sales combo the PS4 seems like an unstoppable train that MS need more than unfortunately a great (and cheap) collection plus a remaster to beat, not that Sony had a great month in terms of releases but Until Dawn is a title that has surprised many people.

Leo’s Fortune Review

1

Leo’s Fortune from Tilting Point is a critically acclaimed platform adventure game making its way from mobile to Xbox One, Playstation 4 and PC in 1080p and follows the story of Leo who is hunting down the thief that stole his gold.

In this remastered version it has 24 levels across 5 chapters – 4 levels per chapter plus an unlockable bonus level which you need to collect some shiny gold gears for and a hardcore difficulty mode where you get 1 life for the entire game, with the aim to complete all the levels without dying once. As each level is only a few minutes long this isn’t perhaps the challenge it might seem like but it will still take some mastering to manage it.

Zombi Review

RulezPlay Screenshot 2015-08-18 17-17-52

ZombiU as it was known in 2012 is a first-person survival horror game, a WiiU exclusive launch title from Ubisoft Montpellier that made extensive use of the gamepad for inventory management and scanning purposes as well as a multiplayer mode, the latter of which was cut for this renamed and retooled version “Zombi”.

So what has changed? As I said the Game Pad integration is gone instead pressing back on the controller makes the character kneel and open his back pack up so you can see if you’re being (or about to be) attacked by a zombie, the map is now displayed on the bottom right hand corner of the screen, holding left bumper brings up the prepper pad which scans environments, field of view increased, general movement and control improvements and finally two new mêlée weapons, a shovel which has a longer reach and a nail bat, both of which also do more damage than the standard cricket bat.

Quest of Dungeons Review

RulezPlay Screenshot 2015-09-06 03-09-36

Quest of Dungeons by Upfall Studios is turn-based rogue like dungeon crawler in which a dark lord has stolen the light and your job is to defeat him choosing from 5 characters with different classes and abilities, releasing on Xbox One and previously launched on PC, iOS and Android.

It is an addictive and very fun game which requires some tactical movement and decision-making is perfect for long or short sessions. It’s really easy to get into and lose time on, I found myself getting attached to my character because of the permadeath and being one wrong turn away from starting again.
